Roni Morgan and
the LDA Experience
reviewed by CK Bertrandus
It was a hot
time in the Atlantic City Trump Taj Mahal last Saturday
night as Roni Morgan and the LDA Experience wowed a crowd
of fans with a tremendous show. Opening act Damsel and
the Plums (Marley Greiner, Shea Grimm, Cyn Holub, and
Alfia Wallace) warmed the crowd up, bumping and grinding
along to oldies and goodies like "Will you still
love me tomorrow?" and "Love Child." Then
it was Roni's turn, and out he came in his controversial
trademark ensemble of big Afro wig, fringed vest, beads
and tie-die. Roni is notoriously uncooperative at interviews, so it is only speculation as to why he dons this garb for performances. Some say that because of the fact that for many years he didn't know his heritage, and, in fact, still doesn't know who that "roving inseminator" (Roni's words) might have been, Roni has deduced from his complexion and facial features that he just may well be part African American. On the other hand, some have asserted that Roni is just a few bricks short of a load. But hey, it's the music that counts, and Roni sure can play, bending those notes till they almost break, sending waves of feedback careening through the theater. The crowd was on its feet for old favorites such as "Foxy Bastard" and "Birthwhore Haze," but it was the closing anthem that tore the house down. "Are you adopted? Have you ever been adopted? Well, I have," crooned Roni as the fans leaped and danced in ecstasy. "Are you adopted? Have you ever been adopted? Are you sure?" As the song drew to a close Roni knelt on stage and set fire to his guitar and his amended birth certificate. The crowd went wild! It was a great climax to a thrilling evening, and a notable first East Coast appearance for Roni and the LDA Experience. |
